The History of Virginia-Highland
Virginia-Highland got its name from the main intersection of Virginia Avenue and Highland Avenue. The history of the area can be traced back to the 1800s, to farmers who settled there. In 1890 the Atlanta Street Railway Company was the first to open the area up to suburban development. At this time developers began buying farms and subdividing them for residential and limited commercial use.
Most of Virginia-Highland was originally developed to enhance and take advantage of the new trolley system. Streets and houses were placed and designed to provide residents with easy access to the trolley line. The area was specifically designed to minimize walking distances between homes and the trolley. Small commercial districts, similar to those that exist there today were built close to the trolley stops to capitalize on trolley patrons and local residents.
The majority of the bungalow style homes in Virginia-Highland were built in the 1910s and 1920s, and the bulk of the commercial development began in 1925. The area prospered and grew up until the 1960s, when then like many other intown neighborhoods, it suffered through disinvestment and neglect. The instability however, was short lived. In the 1970s, families quickly began moving back into the neighborhood and renovating homes which caused property values to increase dramatically.
The Virginia-Highland Civic Association was founded in 1975, and since then it has been very active maintaining and preserving the neighborhood. In the late 1970s the VHCA worked hard and successfully defeated the proposed interstate 485 which otherwise would have destroyed the integrity and character of Virginia-Highland. The VHCA has also overseen significant residential and commercial renovation projects. Because of the VHCA’s hardwork, and residents’ devotion to their neighborhood, Virginia-Highland is one of Atlanta’s most desirable neighborhoods. Although the trolley no longer exists, the vision to build a neighborhood with convenient access to transportation, and shopping continues to flourish here today.
