The History of Sherwood Forest
Sherwood Forest was founded in 1949, but the area’s history can be traced back to 1821 when American Indians ceded large portions of local land to the United States Government. Later in the same year, Meredith Collier and his twin brother Merrell moved from North Carolina and purchased part of the ceded property from the government. Merrel then settled his family in what is now DeKalb County, while Meredith settled on about 2,000 acres between what is now Peachtree Creek down to 14th Street.
The present day Sherwood Forest was originally part of Meredith Collier’s land. In fact, in 1822 Meredith built his home on land that is now considered Sherwood Forest, near an old Indian trail, known today as Peachtree Street. The Collier brothers were some of the first settlers to moveto Atlanta, back when it was named Terminus and only a small railroad community. Meredith was Postmaster of Terminus, and operated the post office out of his home. Meredith Collier had fifteen children, and it was his son George Washington Collier who purchased his father’s home and land.
George Washington Collier opened and operated a grocery store in what is now Five Points Downtown, and lived in his parents home until he died in 1903. Then in 1906, his heirs began selling off his estate. The first portion of land sold became Ansley Park, and the Ansley Golf Club, and the final portion sold was called Collier Woods. Collier Woods was purchased and developed by Haas & Dodd, and acclaimed to be Atlanta’s “poshest” post World War II subdivision. Although the name has been changed from Collier Woods to Sherwood Forest, the neighborhood remains today as one of the “poshest” in intown Atlanta.
