Reynoldstown Real Estate

Reynoldstown is an intown Atlanta  neighborhood in the midst of a transition. Situated between Cabbagetown and Edgewood, Reynoldstown is very accessible via I-20, and only a few minutes from Downtown Atlanta. In recent years Reynoldstown real estate has benefited significantly from a neighborhood group committed to seeing it restored as a thriving intown community.

Reynoldstown was settled originally after the Civil War as a small community of freed slaves who worked for the railroad. For many years the neighborhood was a thriving community of over 6,000 residents. Homes in Reynoldstown are primarily small craftsman style cottages and bungalows, many dating back to the 1800s. As a result of property neglect and high rates of transitional residents, Reynoldstown suffered a serious decline through the late 1960s and 70s.

Eventually things began to turn around when the Reynoldstown Revitalization Corp. was founded in 1989 to combat the downfall of this historic neighborhood. Since then, the organization has worked with local homeowners to help restore their homes and others in the neighborhood. As a result, in the last few years interest and property values in this gentrifying neighborhood have increased significantly. Reynoldstown has, and continues to reemerge as a physically, culturally, and spiritually revitalized intown community.

The History of Reynoldstown

Reynoldstown is one of the oldest African American neighborhoods in Atlanta. It was founded after the Civil War by freed slaves who worked on the local railroad. The community was named after Madison Reynolds, a resident who was a prominent and successfullandowner.

Reynoldstown was a thriving community of working class people from the 1870s until the late 1960s. Many neighborhood residents worked at the railroad, sawmill and local timber industries. At its zenith in the 1950s, Reynoldstown was home to 6,000 residents in 1,230 housing units.

The neighborhood began to decline in the late 1960s and early 1970s as a result of property neglect, and high rates of transitional residents. Falling incomes and educational accomplishments further helped to drive this once thriving community into disrepair, crime and abandonment.

Things in the neighborhood began to improve when the Reynoldstown Revitalization Corporation was founded in 1989 with a mission to improve the neighborhood. Since then, the community has benefited from clean-up campaigns, home restoration,  a community loan fund created to provide emergency assistance to residents in need of immediate home repairs, and much more.

Today, Reynoldstown is well on its way to once again being a thriving intown neighborhood. Property values have increased in the neighborhood as a result of the revitalization efforts, and more and more Atlantans are growing interested in this historic community.
