The History of Old Fourth Ward
Old Fourth Ward has a special place in Atlanta’s history. Itwas the place where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born and raised, and also home to Ebenezer Baptist Church where King preached about social change. Today, Old Fourth Ward is home to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, and also the Carter Presidential Library.
In the 1960s Old Fourth Ward was a thriving residential and commercial area with a population of over 22,000. However, by the 1980s the population had dipped dramatically down to about 6,000. The change in population has been attributed to businesses leaving the area and residents relocating to the suburbs. The drastic decline in population had a dehabilitating effect on the neighborhood where drugs, prostitution, and violence became prevalent.
Despite its downturn, passionate residents and the city of Atlanta did not abandoned Old Fourth Ward, but rather they have joined forces and committed to the gentrification of this historic community. In 2007, city officials from the department of planning and community development released a rejuvenated Old Fourth Ward Master Plan at City Hall. Since then, plans have been carried out and there has been success and a marked improvement in the area. While remaining faithful to its roots, Old Fourth Ward continues daily to transition into a fully restored and improved intown Atlanta neighborhood.
