The History of Morningside-Lenox Park
Although some homes were built earlier, the two separate developments of Morningside and Lenox Park were officially founded in 1931. The developments of Noble Park, Johnson Estates and Hylan Park, which today are encompassed in Morningside-Lenox Park began in 1930. Advertisements for the neighborhoods boasted of 70 foot wide paved streets, and houses with Murphy beds, and a servants toilet in the basement. It was proclaimed that a “new typeof suburb” had been developed where residents could travel to and from their homes by street car, or automobile.
The Morningside and Lenox Park neighborhoods incorporated in the 1960s to form the Morningside Lenox Park Association. The purpose of the MLPA incorporation was to fight the state’s proposed plans of building I-485 through the neighborhoods. The MLPA banded together with other east Atlanta neighborhoods to block the highway and were successful. Since then, the neighborhoods of Morningside and Lenox Park have maintained their unity, and the MLPA has continued to work hard to preserve and maintain this charming intown Atlanta neighborhood.
