The History of Midtown

The majority of the historical buildings in Midtown date back to between the 1890s and 1930s. Home architectural styles include: American Four-squares, duplexes and bungalows, while styles are reminiscent of Queen Anne, Craftsman, Classical Revival, Shingle Style, Gothic Revival and more. Midtown has been known by a few different names over the years; until the 1960’s it was known as the 10th Street Neighborhood, and earlier it was known as Uptown. Midtown  has always been an ideal location, due in part to  Atlanta’s infamous Peachtree Street which runs straight through the area. Peachtree once housed the Governor’s Mansion and other prominent historical residences. In the early days, the Midtown flourished as it provided residents with easy access to downtown and the rest of the developing city.

During the housing shortages of World War II many of the large homes in Midtown were converted into boarding houses. Then in the 1960s and 70s, Midtown struggled like almost all of the other intown Atlanta neighborhoods. Today, however, Midtown stands proudly as one of the most desirable intown addresses in Atlanta. Residents have been diligent to restore and improve Midtown for the benefit of their community and all of Atlanta.
