Although the south Cobb County city of Mableton may be best known as the hometown of former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes, there’s so much more to tout in this town of 33,000.
Located just off I-285 south of the county seat of Marietta, Mableton’s estimated median household income is approximately $53,000, with the average house valued at $107,000. There are more than 500 businesses located in the city, employing some 6,500 people. The median age of a Mableton resident is 34 years old.
Although Atlanta is a short car-ride away, making it a reasonable commute to both downtown and the airport, Mableton still retains an enviable small-town feel. The Atlanta Regional Commission three years ago established the Lifelong Mableton Initiative, which seeks to “promote housing and transportation, encourage healthy lifestyles and expand access to information and services.” The town is also located just 30 minutes from Harstfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). The regional Fulton County Airport at Brown Field (also known as Charlie Brown Airport) is a short drive away.
Recreation
The popular Silver Comet Trail, a paved, multi-use recreation trail that follows the path once utilized by the Silver Comet passenger train, runs through the heart of Mableton, offering a variety of activities, including walking, hiking, jogging, cycling and skating. There are a pair of Silver Comet trailheads in Mableton, on Floyd Road and on Fontaine Road.
The 61-mile trail begins in nearby Smyrna and runs west to the Alabama border, where it picks up with the Chief Ladiga Trail, which runs all the way to Anniston, Alabama, making it the longest paved trail in the country. Recognized in 2003 by the National Park Service as a National Recreation Trail, the Silver Comet Trail also provides access to the 105-acre Heritage Park, located at Fontaine Road and Nickajack Road. The trail is host to a variety of independent and organized outdoors and athletic events.
Is live music your thing? Another popular amenity in the city is the Mabel House Complex, a former plantation and Civil War field hospital located on Floyd Road. In addition to the historic Mable House, the complex includes the Arts Center and the 2,400-seat Barnes Amphitheatre. Friends and neighbors enjoy the likes of America, 38 Special and Grand Funk Railroad, many times with local artists opening the shows.
Home Ownership
Based on relatively low property taxes and its proximity to the interstate, Mableton has experienced growth in residential construction and sales in recent quarters. Among the 30 largest communities in Georgia, Mableton is also just a 30-minute drive from Atlanta and features a baker’s dozen of residential neighborhoods.
Public schools in the community include Riverside Elementary School and Riverside Primary School, Lindley Middle School, Pebblebrook High School and the Martha J. Moore Transitional Learning Center. Private schools include Whitefield Academy and Mableton Christian Academy.
Located within 10 miles of Mableton are a host of higher-learning institutions, including Chattahoochee Technical College, Life University and Southern Polytechnic State University. The city is served by three nearby hospitals, WellStar Cobb Hospital in Austell, Emory-Adventist Hospital in Smyrna and WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.
