The History of Loring Heights
Like many neighborhoods in Atlanta, Loring Heights has a unique history that dates back to the civil war. Loring Heights got its name from Confederate Maj. Gen. William Loring, who occupied the area during the Battle of Atlanta in 1864. Many of the streets are named after Confederate soldiers who fought in the area during the war.
Some of the homes in Loring Heights date back to World War II when they were built to service the nearby railroad and the Atlantic Steel mill. At that time, Loring Heights was known as a first-house neighborhood for working couples. The original homes were two and three bedroom bungalows but, due to the intown housing demand, many of the homes have been renovated into much larger homes, and now bear little resemblance to their original structures.
