The History of Kirkwood

Before the Civil War most of the land that is known as Kirkwood today belonged to two families, the Kirkpatrick family and the Dunwoody family. As you might guess, Kirkwood got its name from the combination of the two former owners names. Residential development of the neighborhood began in the 1870s. By 1910 the streetcar stopped in Kirkwood three times a day which helped the neighborhood continue to develop and grow as a community and commercial district.

Kirkwood was incorporated as a municipality in 1899, and governed by its own city council and mayor. The small community had its own water system, school system and fire department. Kirkwood also built a school, which has been converted into lofts, but the historic building is listed today on the National Register of Historic Homes.

In 1922, Kirkwood was annexed into the city of Atlanta after a community vote. As part Atlanta, the neighborhood continued to grow and change as it went through desegregation in the 50s and 60s. Beginning in the late 60s until the early 1980s Kirkwood suffered a decline. In the 80s the neighborhood benefited from new residents interested in restoring Kirkwood’s historic homes and commercial district.

As a result of the restoration that has taken place in Kirkwood, the neighborhood has grown significantly in popularity. Homes for sale in Kirkwood are in high demand as more Atlantans are looking for convenient and affordable intown homes.
