The History of Inman Park

During the Civil War, the present day Inman Park was the site of much of the fighting that is now known as the Battle of Atlanta. Afterwards in the 1880s, Atlantan Joel Hurt began developing the neighborhood of Inman Park. Hurt also helped to design and develop Druid Hills. When planning Inman Park, Hurt sought to create a country like atmosphere that was convenient to the central business district of Downtown Atlanta. Accordingly, he insisted on homes being built on spacious lots arranged on curving streets and open park areas throughout the neighborhood.

He began selling lots by auction in 1889, and soon thereafter owners began building the Victorian homes that exist today. Hurt even formed the first streetcar system in the nation in Inman Park to provide “rapid transit” from Inman Park to Downtown Atlanta. In it’s early years, the neighborhood was a great success, and home to many wealthy Atlantans, including Asa Candler of Coca-Cola. However, by about 1910 things began to slow down in Inman Park. The Victorian style architecture became a thing of the past, and with the development of the automobile, many residents began to move to newer subdivisions further north.

As more and more residents began to move out of Inman Park it began to seriously decline. The zoning restrictions in the neighborhood expired, resulting in construction of apartment buildings, smaller homes and businesses. Many of the mansions were even subdivided into small apartments. Inman Park suffered its worst decline from the 1950s up until the early 1970s when residents formed the Inman Park Restoration, Inc. and things began to turn around. The resident group began restoring homes, and the park areas, and new residents began moving into the neighborhood. After much hard work, Inman Park seems to have recuperated from the majority of the neglect and decline it suffered. Today, the residents of Inman Park are proud of their community and it is once again a popular intown Atlanta neighborhood.
