The History of Home Park

Home Park stands in place of what was originally Chastaintown. Through the 1900’s Chastaintown was an undeveloped area of trees and hills known for horse trading, named in honor of Avery Chastain. Chastain owned a large estate here, and a home which was located at what is now the corner of Hemphill Avenue and Tenth Street.

The residential development of Home Park began like many other neighborhoods in the area, with the development of the Atlantic Steel Mill, as well as the Exposition Cotton Mill and the Miller Union Stockyards. As the area developed, Avery Chastain built a large building that contained agrocery store, drug store and barbership. Churches and schools were also opened and still exist today.

Home Park was incorporated into the City of Atlanta In 1909 when a Georgia state ordinance expanded the city of Atlanta’s boundaries north beyond Fifth Street. The neighborhood has changed quite a bit since then. Georgia Tech expanded its campus and thus several of the neighborhood blocks were converted from residential to institutional use. Also, so many houses were purchased privately solely to rent to students, that by 1991 only 35% of homeowners actually lived in their homes.

In the early 90’s residents and the Home Park Community Improvement Association began working diligently to combat issues that came with a low owner occupancy rate. This coupled with the increased intown housing demand has had a refreshing effect on the Home Park Neighborhood.  Today, there is a reduced crime rate and an increase in home values. Home Park continues to be a great location for affordable intown living.
