Grant Park Real Estate

Grant Park is the largest historic neighborhood in Atlanta today. It is conveniently located intown, surrounding Grant Park, Atlanta’s oldest surviving park. Grant Park is a transitioning neighborhood, made up of an eclectic variety of homes, recreational options, and friendly residents. It’s not hard to see why this neighborhood is becoming a more and more popular intown Atlanta address.

Grant Park homes range in size and style from small bungalows to larger Victorians, Italianate, Queen Anne and craftsman style homes. The neighborhood dates back to the 1890s, and accordingly many of the homes have been renovated, while others have been torn down and rebuilt, and others still need some work. Grant Park is a very charming old neighborhood with many endearing details including winding cobblestone sidewalks, tall old trees, beautifully landscaped gardens, and retaining walls, which are very common throughout.

Grant Park is home to Zoo Atlanta, the Grant Park Pool, and the Cyclorama which is a circular painting of the 1864 Battle of Atlanta. The zoo, and the neighborhood park and pool provide for great outdoor activity for individuals and families alike. Likewise, the neighborhood itself, which surrounds the park, is a laid back and peaceful setting, perfect for escaping the rush of city life. Residents of Grant Park are very proud of their community and have an active neighborhood association, which oversees a security patrol and other neighborhood issues, while planning fun community events.

Grant Park suffered several years of neglect through the 1960s, but beginning in the 70’s a trend of restoration began that has continued into the present. In the 1980s the entire area was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, which helped to boost interest in renewing and preserving this historic community. Within the past few years, Grant Park real estate has significantly grown in popularity due to its intown location, affordable housing prices, and the excitement that has attached to restoring this beloved Atlanta neighborhood.

Grant Park is served by the following schools: Parkside Elementary School, Neighborhood Charter School, Imagine Wesley, and Kingfisher Academy.

History of Grant Park

Grant Park is named after Col. Lemuel P. Grant, who was a civil engineer for the Georgia Railroad. Grant has been called the “Father of Atlanta” because of his role in bringing the railroad to Atlanta, which ultimately turned a very small community into the city we know today.

Grant served in the civil war as chief engineer for the Department Of The Militia, C.S.A., planning and supervising the construction of defensive lines around Atlanta. After the war, he continued to serve the city by helping to name streets, serving on the city council, serving as a board member of the Bank of the State of Georgia, and also by serving on the drafting committee for the new city of Atlanta charter in 1873.

Grant lived in a 1858 Italianate mansion in the center of his land, which is the present day Grant Park. He eventually gave and traded all of his property to the city of Atlanta. Grant’s property included all of the land on which the present day Grant Park and neighborhood, and the Oakland Cemetery now stand. The neighborhood was subdivided between 1885 and 1905. Between 1889-1898, Mr. G.V. Gress gave the city of Atlanta the zoo and Cyclorama which were added to Grant Park.

Grant Park was a popular neighborhood by the 1890’s for middle and upper middle class families. It remained very popular until after the turn of the century, when some Atlantans who could afford cars, were drawn to more distant neighborhoods like Druid Hills, Ansley Park and Buckhead. It wasn’t until the 1960’s when the neighborhood was divided by the construction of I-20 that the neighborhood began to decline. At this point the neighborhood was cut in half by the six-lane highway, and many residents left the community.

From the 70’s to the present there has been a consistent effort to restore Grant Park to the charming intown neighborhood that it once was. The neighborhood is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized as Atlanta’s largest historic district. The city and residents have worked hard in recent years to turn around the years of decline suffered by Grant Park. Due to their efforts, Grant Park real estate has dramatically grown in popularity, and this historic neighborhood is on its way back to being a premier intown community.
