The History of East Atlanta
East Atlanta’s history dates back to before the Civil War. The Battle of Atlanta took place in East Atlanta causing significant amount of destruction, but afterwards the community quickly rebuilt itself. In the late 1800s the Marbut and Minor Mercantile Store was established at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Flat Shoals Road. The store helped the community prosper as it dealt in five different businesses including dry goods, feed and seed, blacksmith, livery stable, and grocery store.
In 1915 East Atlanta residents voted to be annexed into the Atlanta city limits so that the community would have fire protection, water and sewer services, and access to public education. The community continued to prosper for years, more of the land was subdivided, and many more businesses moved in.
East Atlanta began to suffer in the 1960s because of the prevalent racial segregation. The community was targeted by civil rights groups, and many black families were given assistance under the Fair Housing Act to purchase homes in the neighborhood. In response, many white families moved out of East Atlanta, which caused the neighborhood to decline. In 1981, the East Atlanta Community Association was formed to revitalize the community.
The association has been very successful in improving and restoring East Atlanta, and in recent years East Atlanta has been gaining national attention. The East Atlanta Village was voted “Best Neighborhood” in the city by readers of Creative Loafing, the Washington Post has called the community “the best kept secret in Atlanta,” and the New York Times said East Atlanta is “reaching the crest in what has been a steadily rising wave of cool.”
