The History of Druid Hills
Druid Hills, one of the Atlanta’s oldest neighborhoods was founded in the late 1800s. Before it was called Druid Hills, the area between the Fulton County line and the Fernbank Forest was home to the Middle Creek Indians and a virgin hardwood forest of white dogwoods, beech, sycamores and poplar trees. Settlers migrating into the area eventually moved the Creek off the land and in due course, Georgia’s government subdivided the area into lots and sold them through a lottery.
In the early 1890s Atlantan, and developer Joel Hurt assembled a large tract of land with a vision for what would become Druid Hills. Hurt wanted to create an ideal garden community and went to renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead for assistance. Olmsted was fresh from his work on New York’s Central Park and famous for having designed the grounds around the U.S. Capitol, and the Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina. Olmsted accepted Hurt’s offer and designed a master landscape plan for Druid Hills centered on Ponce De Leon Avenue, so that any traffic would meander and leave its carefully sculpted beauty undisturbed.
Many prominent Atlantan’s were drawn to the neighborhood’s rolling hills and meadows and eclectic mixture of home styles. Soon Italian Renaissance villas, Georgian mansions, Tudor cottages and Jacobean bungalows designed by renowned architects like Ernest Ivey, Philip Trammel Shutze, Arthur Neal Robinson and Neil Reid defined the landscape. The beautiful collection of homes and incredible landscaping in this charming neighborhood made Druid Hills one of Atlanta's most treasured neighborhoods and ensured its place on the National Register of Historic Places.
The U.S. Department of the Interior has described Druid Hills to be "significant as the finest example of late 19thand early 20th century comprehensive planning and development in the Atlanta area, and one of the finest period suburbs in the Southeast.” In the last 100 years Druid Hills has been exemplary in the design of other Atlanta neighborhoods, and is even credited for serving as inspiration for the entire city of Atlanta’s park like design.
