The History of Candler Park
Candler Park is one of Atlanta’s oldest neighborhoods. Many years prior to residential development, the area around Euclid and McLendon Avenues was a Union camp site during the Civil War, resulting in Candler Park being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Founded in 1890, the Candler Park was originally called Edgewood. Edgewood grew and developed significantly with the arrival of Atlanta’s first electric railroad in 1889. Later in 1908, Edgewood was incorporated into the city of Atlanta. The neighborhood’s name was changed in honor of Asa Griggs Candler, who donated the land used to build the central village green park which also bears his name.
Like many of Atlanta’s other intown neighborhoods, Candler Park experienced a brief decline in the late 50s. Fortunately, the community managed to hang onto its historic charm during the lean years, and then Candler Park’s real estate market took off again in late 60s and hasn’t slowed down since. Over the years, the neighborhood has been well taken care of, many homes have been renovated, and many new construction homes and condos have been built as well.
Today, Candler Park offers an easy going, communal atmosphere and some of the most beautiful craftsman style bungalows and Victorian homes in Atlanta. Residents love the neighborhood because of its location, recreational amenities and business district.
